MIHI UMY held a seminar on Dr Abdullah Hehamahua latest book, “Integritas: menyemai Kejujuran, Menuai Kebahagiaan”, on Saturday, May 12th 2019. Dr Abdullah Hehamahua was the advisor of Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (Corruption Eradication Commission) or KPK.
Ustadz Abdullah said that success is not only about the wealth, but also the satisfaction of what we achieve, or “qana’ah”. Denmark, one of the happiest countries in the world, use the term “Pyt” to express the acceptance of what happens in their lives. In Danish, there is the term “Pyt”, which means to accept what happened. “Whatever your salary, one, five, or ten million, will not satisfy you if you do not have the “qana’ah”. We still remember, how 100 million (monthly salary) could not satisfy our Supreme Court, causing him punished for being too greedy.
In explaining the concept of ” integrity “, Ustadz Abdullah said that there were at least six pillars of integrity; honesty, consistency, commitment, objectivity, courageous and decisive, as well as discipline and responsibility.
Finland, which is one of the countries with the highest happiness index, besides Norway, Denmark and Iceland, also highly upholds honesty. The Finnish formula for being a country with the best education is “honesty”. Finnish people need not worry about doors that are not locked at night, or items left behind. Honesty does not only apply to yourself and others but also honest with the environment.
Being honest to yourself means realizing your potency and weaknesses as human beings. Among the millions of sperm cells, only one has successfully managed to become “mudghoh”. However, we should not forget our origin, as it is stated in the Qur’an, that we are (human) were created from despicable semen. Ustadz Abdullah also stressed the crisis of honesty, the loss of shame towards crime indicated that there was a problem with the “aqidah”. Whereas the consistent attitude is unity with actions, steadfast, simple, optimistic and struggle, like a line that is a collection of points.
In explaining the concept of commitment, Ustadz Abdullah exemplifies the behaviour of crows. Crows are birds of high intelligence. In its community, the crows that cheat or steal the food will be punished, that’s law enforcement within the crow community. While commitment is to be like a coconut tree, all parts of the tree, roots, stems, fruits, leaves can provide benefits.
According to Dr Surwandono, the concept of integrity described in Dr Abdullah is ecological integrity, not integrity from the perspective of the instrumentalist.
The seminar event held on the seventh day of Ramadan was continued by discussion, then breaking the fast together with MIHI master students, lecturers, and alumni. During the discussion session, Ustadz Abdullah shared his experience as an advisor of KPK. The threats experienced by KPK officers are not new issues. It’s just that, the Novel Baswedan case just happened to be viral. Each of the officers is provided with a bulletproof vest and weapon to protect themselves. “But I only took the vest and put it in my drawer”, Ustadz Abdullah said.
