Current Political Issues in Philippines

As one of the department in International Relations in Indonesia, issues that develop in neighboring countries, especially in the Southeast Asian region, is very important to discuss. To enrich students’ knowledge regarding the current political developments in the Philippines, the Master of International Relations of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta invited Hazel Jovita, Ph.D. to share her ideas in public lecture on “Current Political Issues in Philippines”, on Monday, November 19th, 2018.
Duterte’s policies often receive the pros and cons from other countries and international organizations. Further, international media frequently describe Duterte’s policy as a controversial policy. Those attracted master students to discuss the changes during Duterte’s administration.
According to Dr. Jovita, Philippines has experienced a number of changes that have never been implemented by the former political leaders. For instance, contraception to control over-population in the Philippines, fighting against drugs and corruption, the establishment of economic cooperation with the Chinese government which had been avoided by the former Philippine’s administrations. However, surveys show Duterte is loved by the majority of the Filipinos. The Philippines has experienced a number of positive changes and become more democratic with its own way since Duterte’s leadership.
