Conflict of Islamic world between Sunni and Shia was begin from muamalah problem, namely dispute over determination of predominant leader, after Rasulullah passed away. From this conflict about who is the most proper leader after Rasulullah, later became wider to aqidah level, in the means as ideologically not compromising to other believe. Minor-scale conflict happened before finally become wider on states level, just like Saudi Arabia and Iran right now. This statement said by Expert on Conflict Resolution and Islamic World Problem Dr. Surwandono, S.Sos., M.Si., on occasion of Book Discussion “Ketegangan Hubungan Sunni- Syi’ah di Timur Tengah (Tension of Sunni-Shia Relations in the Middle East)” written by Ahmad Sahide, S.IP., M.A.. This discussion was taken place in International Relations Meeting Simulation Room UMY, moderated by Muhammad Faris Al-Fadhat, S.IP., M.A., Saturday (30/3). Surwandono explained about the reasons why the Shiites quarreled with the Sunnis. When in the occasion of arrangement of Rasulullah’s dead body, Abu Bakar and Umar also others Sahabat organized meeting to determine the later leader. While Ali and his families doing Rasulullah’s funeral. For that reason the Shiites stated that the Sunnis was impolite and grabbed single-handedly the leadership, as on their belief the proper leader was Ali not Abu Bakar. “Because of that arrangement of Rasulullah’s dead body, the Shiites said that the Sunnis was impolite, while the others was in sorrow, they are disputing the leadership”, explained by this IR UMY lecturer. Beside that, the Shiites blamed the Sunnis because of Mu’awiyah’s action. Mua’awiyah is assumed seized away Ali bin Abi Thalib leadership, he also assumed as a mastermind behind assassination of Hasan and also Husein in Karbala. “Shiites assumed all the Sunnis is Mu’awiyah, so then the Shiites curses every Sunnis. Whereas it is not necessarily the Sunnis involved on Mulawiyqah’s politics, moreover not necessarily Mu’awiyah had fatal fault”, explained by Surwandono. Dr. Surwandono said that in the time Safavid Dynasty, it happened that the Shiites asked the Sunnis to merge up. But this idea rejected by the Sunni’s ulemas, because of the precepts and beliefs of Shia was swerve far away from Islamic precept, namely al-Qur’an and Sunnah. “Because of Shia’s precept is swerve so far, so the Sunni’s ulemas agreed to reject”, said him. Surwandono invited participants of the discussion to be the side to give resolution, not to disturb the tensions berween Sunni and Shia. It is reasonable that the academician should become pioneer to revive the reconciliation tradition, not instead adding the pollution. “From the academician, the idea and concept for peace must appear, not instead adding the fuel for hostility”, he persuaded. While the book writer, Ahmad Sahide, added that in Indonesia the tension between Sunni and Shia is very unique. It is observed that in Indonesia there is a similarity with the Shia’s system, just like infallibility of politician or religious figure. For that reason, in one hand Shia is praised, while on the other hand is hated. “It is caused by there is a similarity of idea in Indonesia and the Shia”, added by that UMY alumni. (syah)
